Harbor vs SimplePractice

Harbor is a behavioral-health EHR that also runs the front office: it answers your phone, files and works your insurance claims, and drafts your notes, for one flat monthly price. SimplePractice is the polished market leader, and the practical difference is that its AI notes and its claim filing sit on separate, higher-priced tiers while Harbor puts them in the base price.

SimplePractice is a capable platform and for a lot of practices it is the right answer. Every figure below comes from their own published pricing, last read on 2026-08-08. Where they do not publish something, this page says so instead of guessing.

Stay with SimplePractice if any of this is you

Switching an EHR is disruptive and nobody does it for fun. These are the cases where we would tell you to stay put, and we would say the same thing on a call.

  • You prescribe. SimplePractice has ePrescribe and Harbor has no prescribing module at all -- that alone should settle it.
  • You rely on the native iOS or Android app day to day. Harbor clinicians use the mobile-responsive web workspace; the store apps are for the patient portal.
  • You use a specific integration from their ecosystem that your practice is built around. Confirm that Harbor supports your required integrations before switching.
  • You are self-pay only and never touch insurance. Most of what Harbor charges for is billing infrastructure you would not use.

What SimplePractice does better

  • A more polished, more mature interface, refined over many more years and many more practices.
  • Native mobile apps and a well-established client portal.
  • A large integration ecosystem and a name your clients may already recognize.
  • A 24/7-scale support organization. Harbor is email and scheduled calls during business hours.

Why practices move from SimplePractice to Harbor

  • The bill grew. The entry plan does not file insurance claims, and the AI Note Taker is an add-on on every tier including the top one, so the real monthly number is rarely the advertised one.
  • Nobody is answering the phone. SimplePractice does not include a front desk, so a missed call is still a missed call.
  • Compare the claim submission and denial follow-up work your practice needs, including payer-specific requirements.

The difference that actually matters

SimplePractice is an excellent record of what already happened. Harbor is trying to be the part of the practice that happens -- the call that gets answered, the claim that gets worked, the billing task that gets reviewed -- because it owns the record it is writing into.

Plan your setup

Confirm these workflow requirements before switching:

  • Prescribing. No ePrescribe module. Use a separate prescribing solution.
  • Credentialing. Harbor does not credential providers. You bring your panels.
  • Native mobile apps. The web app is fully mobile-responsive; native patient portal apps have store listings; the clinician workspace runs on the web.
  • Support model. Email and scheduled calls during business hours, with on-call escalation for critical issues.
  • Referrals. Harbor does not supply patients. Your relationships stay yours.

Questions people actually ask

Is Harbor cheaper than SimplePractice?
For a practice that bills insurance and wants AI notes, usually yes, because those are add-ons or higher tiers at SimplePractice and are in Harbor’s base price. For a self-pay practice on the entry plan that does not want AI notes, SimplePractice is cheaper and you should not switch on price.
Can I move my client data out of SimplePractice?
Yes. SimplePractice provides data exports, and Harbor imports demographics directly. Be clear-eyed about the limit: Harbor’s importer brings over demographics, not your full historical note archive, so plan to keep an exported copy of past notes regardless of where you land.
Does Harbor do everything SimplePractice does?
No. SimplePractice has ePrescribe, native mobile apps, and a much larger integration ecosystem. Harbor adds an AI receptionist, insurance claims and denials worked inside the record, with clinician review required.
How long does switching take?
Plan on a couple of weeks of overlap. The realistic sequence is: import demographics, re-enter active insurance, run both systems in parallel for a billing cycle, then move the phone number last. Anyone promising a same-day cutover on an insurance practice is not being straight with you.

Running a group? Group pricing is $149/mo per clinician with no practice base fee. Signed pilot pricing is honored as agreed.
